A stranger (Joseph Wiseman) appears and disturbs their bucolic existence by spreading a malicious rumor that their adopted daughter, Rachel (Audrey Hepburn), is a Kiowa Native American. Soon, the Zachary brothers (Audie Murphy, Burt Lancaster) and their mother (Lillian Gish) must defend themselves from both racist whites and vengeful Kiowa.
Jericho (Mark Valley) wakes up with no memory, but it's apparent that he's quite skilled with a gun. He is befriended by Joshua (Leon Coffee), who appears to be his polar opposite: He's a black man and true believer in the Lord, whereas Jericho is white and doubtful of everything, especially himself. Side by side, they attempt to piece together the amnesiac's past, which may or may not have something to do with a robbery, and either way is somehow connected to a town that's also called Jericho.
Loner government agent Singin' Sandy Saunders (John Wayne) witnesses what seems to be a stagecoach robbery, committed by young Fay Denton (Cecelia Parker). But Fay is actually just trying to get her hands back on her own money in order to keep it from thieving stooges Bert (Al "Fuzzy" St. John) and Elmer (Heinie Conklin) and their boss, local land grabber James Kincaid (Forrest Taylor). Saunders then teams up with Kay to fight off the gang and derail the criminal plots of the greedy Kincaid.
When their father is shot by Dan Kirby (Terry Frost) after discovering a gold mine on his ranch, Larry Hadley (Steve Drake) and his sister, Janet (Shirley Patterson), ask foreman Eddie Dean (Eddie Dean) for help in retaining their land. Eddie's arrival with sidekick Soapy Jones (Roscoe Ates) disrupts Dan's plans to take over the property. Desperate to obtain the ranch, Dan blackmails accountant Tuttle (Bill Fawcett) into forging a document that will help him take control.
Just before Bess (Lucile Browne) returns home to the ranch owned by her father, Dan Matthews, robbers attack him and his friend, Sheriff John Higgins (John Wayne) -- and Dan is killed in the gunfight. Convinced that one of his shots resulted in Dan's death, John resigns as sheriff. Former sheriff Ed Williams (George Hayes) convinces John to work for Bess to make up for his error, and he becomes her foreman. John doesn't confide his involvement in her father's death, but Bess soon hears rumors.
William (Henry Thomas), a Confederate soldier, has gone AWOL with a crew of other men. As the group, among it a runaway slave (Isaiah Washington) and a nurse (Nicki Aycox), makes its way along, it stops off to rob a bank clean. Looking to plan a getaway, the gang heads into an empty house to hole up for the evening. As the soldiers start arguing with one another, strange things begin happening in the house -- and everyone in the group soon realizes that the place is haunted.
