Confederate veteran John Chandler (Alan Ladd) returns from defeat in war to find his home razed, his wife dead and his young son, David (David Ladd), traumatized and rendered mute. Desperate to cure the boy, Chandler takes David to a small town in Illinois where he hopes to find a doctor. But, soon after the pair arrives, Chandler finds himself framed for assault -- and forced to choose between serving hard time and working for struggling local farmer Linnet Moore (Olivia de Havilland).
Captain Phillip Donlin (Lloyd Bridges) and his small troop must rush to reach Little Big Horn in order to warn General Custer of the Sioux attack that awaits him. As they race against time, and Donlin pushes them hard through an arduous and dangerous journey, the Sioux start taking out the soldiers one at a time. Meanwhile, Donlin also clashes with Lt. John Haywood (John Ireland), who Donlin knows is having an affair with his wife, Celie (Marie Windsor).
After finding a large oil bed underneath a lake, crooked engineer Del Roberts (Douglas Fowley) plots to take control of a fish hatchery run by Russell Masters (Lucien Littlefield), brother of Roberts' accomplice, Martin Masters (Robert Emmett Keane). Acting sheriff Roy (Roy Rogers) and his deputies square off against Roberts and his henchmen, and visiting female ichthyologist "Doc" Parker (Dale Evans) is caught in the crossfire between the opposing camps.
Cowboy Fuzzy (Al "Fuzzy" St. John) is riding in a stagecoach with young Jean (Patti McCarty), on his way to a business deal with her father. The coach is attacked by bandits, but luckily Fuzzy's buddy Billy Carson (Buster Crabbe) is in the vicinity, and he comes to the rescue, fending off the outlaws. Billy helps Jean get back home, only to learn that the bandits he's just thwarted have killed her father and pinned the crime on Fuzzy. Billy then must go after the real murderers.
